Alpha-lipoic acid
Versatile and strong – Alpha Lipoic Acid:
Alpha lipoic acid – also known as lipoic or thioctic acid – is a particularly remarkable example of the rapid progress in knowledge that nutritional science has made in recent years. Although the structure, chemical properties and physiological functions of this body’s substance were described as early as the 1950s, the actual potential of lipoic acid – apart from the occasional use in neuropathies – remained undiscovered for a long time. This “Sleeping Beauty” ended abruptly a few years ago when the vitamin researchers discovered the outstanding antioxidant properties of lipoic acid.
Since then, the researchers have been enthusiastic. Dr. Lester Packer, one of the world’s leading antioxidant researchers and professor of molecular cell biology at the famous Berkeley University, says in a nutshell: “Lipoic acid is the most powerful antioxidant that humans know”. As is well known, scientists argue about a lot, but they agree on one thing: The damage that free radicals cause in our body is the main reason that we age, that normal body functions deteriorate over the years and that our organism is more susceptible to disorders and Degeneration will.
Alpha lipoic acid, as an antioxidant, slows down the aging process
If oxidative processes in our body are not absorbed by appropriate antioxidants, we age faster, deteriorate in our performance and become more susceptible to diseases. A great way to slow aging is to use potent antioxidants to limit oxidative damage. When it was discovered more than 60 years ago, alpha-lipoic acid was still considered a vitamin. Only later, after it was determined that the human organism can produce this substance, was it reclassified. And so alpha-lipoic acid is still considered one of the most powerful and versatile antioxidants with long-term effects.
Alpha lipoic acid is a particularly versatile antioxidant
In contrast to other antioxidants, lipoic acid is both fat and water soluble. As a result, it can protect both the more aqueous cell areas, blood and extra-cellular space as well as the fatty cell parts (e.g. the cell walls, membrane), lipoproteins in the blood or the fatty nerve sheaths from oxidation. That is why lipoic acid stands for Dr. Packers come first in the hierarchy of synergistic antioxidants as the “most versatile and powerful” of these substances.
Of all the notable antioxidants, only alpha-lipoic acid has the ability to act in both water-soluble and fat-soluble environments.
This unique ability means that alpha lipoic acid can work anywhere in our body, even where oxidative cell damage leads to many age-related diseases such as heart disease and diabetes. Because of this property, and also because of its relatively small molecular size, alpha-lipoic acid has another important ability: alpha-lipoic acid can cross the blood-brain barrier – in contrast to many other popular antioxidants! This ability also enables a protective effect against neurological and cognitive diseases such as Alzheimer’s. Due to the energy metabolism in the fuel cells of our body, the mitochondria, free radicals with oxidative damaging effects are continuously released. If there is a lack of defense through appropriate antioxidants, for example malnutrition, the cumulative damage leads to numerous, mostly age-related negative effects.
Double benefit: Alpha lipoic acid can reactivate other antioxidants
Just as unique is the ability of lipoic acid to regenerate itself, as well as the important antioxidants vitamins C and E, glutathione and coenzyme Q 10: it restores the full antioxidant power of these protective substances after they have been used in the defense against free radicals. Lipoic acid is therefore, like Dr. Packer says, “The antioxidant of the antioxidants.”
Oxidative substances are inhibited and reduced
Leading scientists support the theory of free radical aging, including the renowned biochemist Bruce Ames from the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Ames and his colleagues claim: “Oxidations are by-products of the normal metabolism, but they cause considerable damage to DNA, proteins and lipids.” They also point out that the damage makes a significant contribution to aging and the corresponding Diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, immune disorders, brain dysfunction and cataracts. Surprisingly, alpha-lipoic acid can not only have an antioxidant effect, it also helps to reduce the production of oxidative substances as a by-product of metabolism.
In orthomolecular therapy, alpha lipoic acid is used orally for:
Diabetes
By increasing the glucose uptake in the insulin-resistant cells, alpha-lipoic acid optimizes the glucose tolerance and thus improves the diabetic state. In addition to the oral intake of alpha-lipoic acid, high-dose intravenous administration can further increase the positive effect in diabetes.
To determine the effect of alpha-lipoic acid on insulin sensitivity, European researchers treated 12 overweight adults with type 2 diabetes and an average age of 53 years. 600 mg were administered twice daily over a period of 4 weeks. Twelve subjects with normal glucose tolerance served as a control group. Research showed that an improvement in insulin sensitivity was noticeable after 4 weeks.
Dementia
As one of several neurodegenerative diseases, dementia is the result of unchecked aging in the entire organism. The health of the brain cells can be significantly influenced by alpha-lipoic acid. By crossing the blood-brain barrier, alpha-lipoic acid is one of the few antioxidants in the entire body.
Chronic fatigue syndrome
The main reason for chronic fatigue syndrome is an impaired energy metabolism. This takes place in the mitochondria and is enormously stimulated by alpha-lipoic acid.
Cancer
Alpha lipoic acid is not only able to protect the mitochondria from oxidative destruction. Due to the activating effect on other antioxidative substances, alpha-lipoic acid can even repair damaged structures. By impairing the energy balance of the cancer cells, it stimulates their downfall.
Other clinical pictures that can benefit from an alpha-lipoic acid intake:
Peripheral neuropathy
Cardiac autonomic neuropathy
Cataract and glaucoma
liver disease
Disease
Lyme disease
Metabolic disorders
Lose a few extra pounds as a side effect?
As mentioned at the beginning, alpha-lipoic acid is active in both water and fat-soluble surroundings. According to the marginal results from studies, this led to improved fat burning within the cells. Experiments on mice with increased adipose tissue, which were examined for changes in insulin tolerance by administration of alpha-lipoic acid, showed a significant weight loss in the course of the study. In addition, the mass of mitochondria in the adipocytes (fat cells) increased. Should alpha-lipoic acid be used as a natural weight loss aid? The head of research says: “Taking alpha-lipoic acid for general health maintenance is always a wise decision. Then even extra pounds tumble, so much the better! ”
Alpha lipoic acid: an all-rounder as an antioxidant
Alpha-lipoic acid has been well researched as an antioxidant. The spectrum of activity extends across the entire organism. Last but not least, this power is due to the fact that “recycling” of essential nutrients and vitamins such as C, E, Q10 and glutathione takes place. This increases the absorption of these substances in the body while taking alpha-lipoic acid.
Neuroprotective properties
Lipoic acid is “the only antioxidant that gets into the brain easily”
explains Dr. Packer. “Their molecules are so small that they easily
Pass through the barrier and be quickly absorbed by the brain tissue
can. ”This is so crucial because it is lipoic acid,
which are the nitrogen radicals which are particularly dangerous for the brain cells as well can render the nitrogen oxide harmless.
In combination with acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) in particular, alpha-lipoic acid was able to demonstrate its neuroprotective properties in the test laboratory. The combination of these two substances proved to be synergistic, i.e. the protective effects due to the combined intake were more pronounced than the sum of the effects when the two individual substances were administered separately or alternately.
